Shelley Monroe Huang, Bassoon

Praised by the New York Times for "playing with superb agility and accuracy and with a full-bodied, chocolatey sound" Shelley has appeared as soloist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, and New Music New Haven.  As a concert bassoonist and contrabassoonist, Shelley has performed with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, and the Charlotte, Albany, New Haven, and Princeton symphony orchestras.  Before completing her doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook under the tutelage of Frank Morelli, Shelley earned degrees from the Eastman and Yale schools of music.   Shelley is a dedicated chamber musician, performing in the United States and in Asia.  She is a bassoonist with Decoda (a New York-based chamber music collective) and a past bassoon fellow at Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect.  As a teaching artist, Shelley performs in school, universities and community venues.  She leads song-writing projects, teaches students to play the recorder, and works with Carnegie Hall on The Lullaby Project, a program where new parents writes lullabies for their babies.  Shelley is currently Faculty at Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program and at Mannes Prep.  Shelley is also Visiting Professor at Guangzhou Conservatory in China.  Also an avid contemporary musician, Shelley recently performed Sofia Gubaidulina's Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings, and gave the world premieres of her husband Huang Ruo's works Wind Blows... and Book of the Forgotten.
