Music for Transformation at Lee Correctional Institution - "Lincoln Portrait"

  • Lee Correctional Institution (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In 2017 - 2018, Decoda’s criminal justice initiative, Music for Transformation, will explore the writings of Abraham Lincoln as the theme for new music generated through workshops in South Carolina. Guided by five members of Decoda and guest artist Sarah Elizabeth Charles, 50 incarcerated men from Lee Correctional Institution will work together to research, study, and develop musical settings of Lincoln’s letters and speeches, creating original compositions and songs using his words, and original writings in reaction to his words. With inspiration drawn from the celebrated American composer Aaron Copland’s popular musical work Lincoln Portrait (1942), MFT Lee Correctional will contribute to a rich musical quilt reflecting Lincoln’s philosophical and social ideals. This project, energized by the Broadway smash-hit Hamilton will explore Lincoln’s life story and his own words and meld musical genres to create a rock/country/soul/hip-hopera to paint a musical portrait of the Great Emancipator. Decoda would like to thank the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation for their generous support in making this project happen. Music For Transformation workshops are also sponsored by a multitude of charitable donations made graciously by Decoda's supporters and donors.
