Decoda in Blue Hill, Maine

  • Blue Hill Congregational Church 22 Tenney Hill Road Blue Hill Maine 04614 (map)

Decoda is excited to return to Blue Hill for our second season performing at the Blue Hill Music Association! This year, we're presenting a flute trio in a fun program based on the reinvention of folk music.

Many composers enjoy paying homage to the past by putting their own spin on traditional folk material. In pieces like Haydn's Piano Trio in G Major "Gypsy" or Martinu's Variations on a Slovak Theme for cello and piano, Haydn gives a nod to traditional Hungarian rhythms and style, while the theme of the Martinu variations is the old Czech folksong, "If I Only Knew." Jack Body and Gabriela Lena Frank dig thousands of years in the past to salute the sounds and traditions of ancient cultures. In Body's Rainforest for flute and piano, we hear wild reinterpretations of the music of Pygmy groups in Central Africa; the Frank offers a fascinating, imaginative look at ancient South American cultures based on collected artifacts.
