By painting portraits of his artist friends on the side, American painter John Singer Sargent created a sort of “diary” of his own influences, aspirations and personal allegiances. Many composers past and present have done the same to immortalize their deeply admired friends and influences by way of musical portraits. In these works, how do composers use music to evoke their loved ones? And given the personal nature of the subjects, are any special techniques or ideas being employed? Whether visual or aural, these portraits are significant because of the personal meaning behind each one.
